From a very young age, Ummul Kher has been living and battling with fragile bone disorder. Fragile bone disorder is a disorder that results in bones that break easily. Often referred to as “Osteogenesis Imperfecta” which means “imperfectly formed bone”. Living with such a disorder comes with several struggles for Ummul, but this never stopped her determination to pursue her education and a dream job of becoming an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) Officer.

At the age of 14, Ummul had been disowned by her parents for her determination to study beyond the eighth grade. Many doubted her and there were set backs, however, she still managed to receive admission to a prestigious Delhi University College. Ummul scored 91% on her final twelfth grade exam and received another admission to a prestigious college (Gargi College). She used money that she won through debates and other involvements to pay for her tuition, and truly felt independent.

After completing her Bachelor’s degree, she was accepted into a Master’s education program.

Ummul Kher is one of the many people who struggled yet conquered, regardless of their disabilities. Today she is happy and healthy, and planning to begin her job as an IAS officer.
