In the upcoming fall, the Ontario government plans on making a change to the Family Law Act enabling adult children with disabilities access to child support.
Adult children have access to child support in every Canadian’s provide except for Ontario and Alberta, regardless of the situation. The decision to change this was inspired by a single mother from Brampton who’s goal was to win child support for her 22 year old disabled son.
The mother felt the urge to fight her case and spread awareness in order to prevent future parents of disabled children from facing abandonment by their partner once their child becomes an adult.
Finally justice is being served for adult children with disabilities and their families as the court recognizes the limitations that such individuals face when it comes to receiving the appropriate support from the government.
